The very low lying County of Cambridgeshire is in England. Holme Fen is 9 feet below sea level and is the site of the lowest physical point in England. A number of the great minds of the past 700 years were alumni of Cambridge University, they include Charles Darwin, Isaac Newton and Francis Bacon.
Peterborough sits on the River Nene. It was used for location shots for 2 James Bond films – Golden Eye and Octopussy. These movie sets may have made use of Caterers Cambridgeshire.
In the north east of Cambridgeshire is Ely, and Ely, is famous for its spectacular cathedral which was started by William I in 1083.
The Cambridgeshire village of Sawtry has a population of just over five thousand people. Sawtry is a commuter town due to its closeness to the A1(M).
Another town in Cambridgeshire is Soham. In the 2nd World War a fire began on an ammo train that was travelling through Soham. The train would have exploded and destroyed the town had four heroic firemen who unbuckled the rest of the train and guided the burning section away from the town. 2 of the firemen were killed – Jim Nighthall and Frank Bridges and the other two survived – Herbert Clarke and Benjamin Gibert. There is now a memorial in Soham explaining about the event.
Oliver Cromwell was born in Huntingdon, Huntingdon is now in Cambridgeshire but it used to be the county town of Huntingdonshire.
John Bellingham, the only man to have assassinated a British Prime Minister lived in St Neots. The prime minister was called Spencer Perceval and the year was 1812. Bellingham was hanged for the crime 7 days after the assassination.
