Argyllshire, Perthshire, Angus, Kincardineshire, West Lothian, Fife, Kinross-shire, Clackmannanshire, Stirlingshire, Dumbartonshire, Bute and Renfrewshire have been categorised together within the Caterers Scotland – Central category. This area is sometimes known as the “Central Belt” and sits between the Highlands and the Scottish Uplands.

One of the top 20 leading financial centres in Europe and the third most populated city in the UK Glasgow is Scotland’s largest city The wider Glasgow area has a population of over 2.3 million people. Of the ten largest UK insurance companies, eight have a base or headquarters in Glasgow. Glasgow was a European City of Culture in 1990. Glasgow was also the site of the first ever international football match which was held in 1872. The game was played between England and Scotland and the final score was 0-0. Glasgow is home to one of the biggest football rivalries in Europe – both Celtic and Rangers come from Glasgow.

Glasgow may be Scotland’s largest city but it is not the capital city – that honour is bestowed upon Edinburgh. The largest festival of comedy in the world is held in Edinburgh the UK’s 7th biggest city, The Edinburgh Comedy Festival. One of the most famous new years eves parties is held in Edinburgh and Edinburgh holds the title of 2nd most visited city in the UK. Xi’an in China – home of the Terracotta Warriors is twinned with Edinburgh. Very close to the centre of Scotland’s capital city is the county of West Lothian – the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots.

Argyll or Argyllshire as it is sometimes known is the 2nd largest county in Scotland and on the west coast of the central belt. Argyll and Bute is the now the administrative area that Argyll is part of.

A large county in central Scotland is Perthshire. The county town called Perth, has lent its name to many other cities around the world – most famously the City of Perth in Western Australia.

The county town of Angus is Forfar on the east coast of central Scotland in the county of Angus. Kincardineshire is home to a number of castles to the north east of Angus on the coast. One of these castles is the very impressive Dunnottar castle which is two miles south of Stonehaven.

Home to St Andrew’s University on the east coast of central Scotland – the oldest university in Scotland and thought to be one of the oldest 30 universities in the world that is still going.

The other five counties; Kinross-shire, Clackmannanshire, Stirlingshire, Dumbartonshire and Renfrewshire lie in a line across the centre of Scotland. Dunbartonshire is home to Loch Lomond – which was voted the 6th best natural wonder in Britain in a 2005 Radio Times poll.
