Devon is a county situated in the South West of the UK with the Bristol Channel to its northern flank and the English Channel to the South. The city of Exeter is the county town of Devon and other major towns / cities include Torquay, Plymouth, Axminster, Barnstaple, Newton Abbot, Ilfracombe and Lynmouth. Torquay is part of the Torbay conurbation – which also includes Paignton and Brixham.

The city of Exeter, Devon’s county town, has a cathedral that is almost 1000 years old and is the home of an international airport. The cathedral was damaged during air raids in the second World War but remains a popular destination to visit.

16 miles south east of Exeter is the town of Torquay, the third biggest settlement in Devon, behind Exeter and Plymouth. The city has a number of striking beaches and pocesses more “European Blue Flags” than any other town in the Great Britain. These are awarded for water quality and beach facilities. Torquay was also the insight for the 1970’s witty TV series Fawlty Towers.

Devon is the abode to the only UNESCO World Heritage Site in England – the Jurassic Coast. The site stretches from near Exmouth in Devon to East Dorset. The entire distance is just under 100 miles and can be traversed by using the South West Coast Path. The seaside town of Exmouth that rises to the peak of Orcombe Point. Most of the structures in Exmouth were constructed in Victorian times.

Devon is thought to be one of the first areas that humans established a place in following the ice age and Dartmoor is thought to have been home to humans about 8000 years ago. Dartmoor is sheltered by its National Park ranking and is looked after by the Dartmoor National Park Authority. The park has around 450 miles of footpaths and bridleways.

The county of Devon’s 2nd Biggest habitation, Plymouth is constructed on the Beautiful river Plym and has suburbs including Plymstock and Plympton, the city enjoy’s average summer temperatures of around 19 degrees centigrade.

The town plays hosts to six carnivals every year including processions, walking celebrations and “the Lighting of the Lights” which is held every November.
