Considerations when chooing a marquee company

Considerations when choosing a marquee company
An article by Chichester Canvas

When choosing a marquee company you will almost certainly want to be assured that you are dealing with a reputable company with excellent product knowledge and quality of service, but how can you be certain of this?

Well there are a few things to look out for, firstly you should consider companies that are members of MUTA which is the main regulatory body for marquee contractors in the UK. MUTAmarq is The Performance Textiles Association accreditor scheme for marquee contractors and has well over a hundred members in the UK all of which conform to strict code of practice with regards to customer service and safety. In order for a company to become a member, they must firstly meet a number of criteria in order to join and also conform to a strict code of practice set by the association.

To list a few of these criteria a company must:

  • Have been trading for a minimum of two years
  • Be nominated for membership from two companies within the association. Which helps ensure that companies with a good reputation are offered membership.
  • Agree to periodic inspection – they are obliged to have hire stock checked yearly and have spot safety checks on at least three occasions by a MUTA inspector
  • Have adequate public liability insurance (at least £1,000,000)
  • Have a documented Health and Safety policy and produce Risk Assessments
  • Have home office fire certification
  • Have a credit history free of county court judgments
  • Have no disqualified persons as directors
Marquee companies that display the MUTAmarq logo are an obvious choice if you want to deal with a reputable and professional business.

It is also worthwhile asking if the company’s members of staff are NVQ qualified. Nearly 20,000 people are involved in the business of erecting and furnishing marquees in the UK and currently this is the only qualification related to this industry. The national vocational qualification for marquee erectors is designed to achieve higher standards of service and ensure public safety.

If the employees of the marquee company have this qualification it demonstrates that their employer recognises the need to have workers with all the necessary skills and experience to put up marquees, whilst also ensuring that the work that they do will be carried out to a high standard. Companies that wish to deal with major events will ensure that their staff have this qualification as it is now a requirement by many event organisers.
