Cambridgeshire is a county in England that is generally very low lying. Cambridgeshire is the site of the lowest physical point in England – Holme Fen, in Cambridgeshire, is 9 feet below sea level. The county town of Cambridgeshire is Cambridge, which is also the most well known city. Other areas include Ely, Huntingdon, Peterborough, Wisbech, St Neots, Sawtry and Soham.
The university city of Cambridge lies about 50 miles to the north of London. The university was originally formed in 1209 and along with Oxford University is one of the most well known universities in the world. They both compete in the Varsity Boat Race. The University is regularly ranked in the world’s top 5 universities – in 2007 the THES-QS World University rankings placed it as the World’s 2nd best University. Many of the great minds of the last 700 years were alumni of the University, they include Charles Darwin, Isaac Newton and Francis Bacon.
Peterborough is in the ceremonial county of Cambridgeshire and sits on the River Nene. It was used for location shots for two James Bond Movies – Golden Eye and Octopussy.
Ely, in the north east of Cambridgeshire, is well known for its impressive cathedral which was started by William I in 1083.
Sawtry is a Cambridgeshire village with a population of just over 5000 people. Sawtry is a commuter town due to its proximity to the A1(M).
Soham is also in Cambridgeshire. In the 2nd World War a fire began on an ammo train that was going through Soham. The train would have blown up and destroyed the town had 4 heroic firemen who unbuckled the rest of the train and drove the burning section away from the town. 2 of the firemen were killed – Jim Nighthall and Frank Bridges and the other two survived – Herbert Clarke and Benjamin Gibert. There is now a memorial in Soham explaining about the event.
Huntingdon is now in Cambridgeshire but it used to be the county town of Huntingdonshire. Huntingdon was the birthplace of Oliver Cromwell.
John Bellingham, the only man to have assassinated a British Prime Minister lived in St Neots. The prime minister was called Spencer Perceval and the assassination was 1812. Bellingham was hanged for the crime 7 days after the assassination.
