The county of Essex is a highly inhabited county in the east of Britain, with a population of more than 1.65 million people. Essex has 17 seats in parliament, which are mainly Conservative. The county of Essex is twinned with 4 regions over the planet – these include Jiangsu, in China.
The County of Essex has a number of large towns and built up areas. These include Southend, Thurrock, Colchester, Chelmsford, Basildon, Harlow and Chigwell. Towns like Basildon, Dagenham and Harlow were primarily built to help house people after London was battered during World War 2.
Essex is split up into 14 districts. These are Harlow, Epping Forest, Brentwood, Basildon, Castle Point, Rochford, Maldon, Chelmsford, Uttlesford, Braintree, Colchester, Tendring, Thurrock and Southend-on-Sea.
The County of Essex is positioned next door to London, which is very well-liked with people working in London and many of its closer towns act as commuter towns. London Stansted Airport is located in Essex. A big length of the M25 runs through Essex and the county is serviced by major railway routes.
Surprisingly in 1884 an earthquake happened in the county of Essex and is thought to have been the most destructive earthquake in Britain in more than 400 years. The town most affected by the earthquake was Colchester. It is estimated that around 3 and 5 people were killed by the earthquake and that £10,000 of damage was caused.
Epping Forest is an expanse of forest that acts as a border between the county of Essex and London. Epping Forest covers almost 6000 acres and contains a number of different land types, these include bogs, grassland and ponds.
The most significant towns in Essex is Southend-on-Sea. Much of Southend’s economy is based on tourism and the town boasts the world’s longest pleasure pier. Southend pier is an amazing 1.34 miles long!
Thurrock is also a major borough in Essex, whose administrative headquarters are in Grays, which is the base of the Thameside Theatre. Lakeside shopping Centre is also in Thurrock, Lakeside is Essex’s largest town shopping centre – covering 240,000 squared meters of retail space. Making it one of the biggest shopping centre’s in Europe.
Chelmsford was the home to the United Kingdom’s first ball bearing factory – which was opened in 1898 and is also home to Britvic – which is an abbreviation of the company’s original name – The British Vitamin Company.
The town of Braintree is located in the centre of the county of Essex and lies about 50 metres above sea level. The town is home to the popular band The Prodigy.
