Berkshire is a home county in the south east of England which borders London as well as five other counties. Berkshire (or Berks as it is often known) is the home of Windsor Castle – a royal residence – and is thought to be one of the oldest counties in England. Major Berkshire settlements include Reading, Windsor, Abingdon, Slough, Maidenhead Bracknell, Sandhurst, Crowthorne, Wokingham, Newbury, Hungerford, Thatcham, Lambourn and Twyford.
Reading became the county town of Berkshire in 1867 and now has a large student population because of its two universities. The local shopping centre, the Oracle, has been a popular shopping destination since it was built in 1999. Reading is also home to the 10th oldest school in England – Reading school.
Slough, which sits in between Reading and London is a borough and is the most ethnically diverse borough in Berkshire. It is also the most ethnically diverse borough in England, outside of London.
Windsor, immediately to the south of the River Thames, is in the Berkshire borough called “The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead” Windsor is best known for the castle which brings a huge amount of tourism to the area. Windsor Castle is the world’s largest inhabited castle and is one of the three principle residences for the British Royal Family. In November 1992 a fire ravaged through the castle and damaged over 100 rooms – completely destroying nine of them.
Another major tourist destination near the Berkshire town of Windsor is Legoland which opened in 1996 on the site of the old Windsor Safari Park. In the same Berkshire borough as these two tourist destinations is the town of Maidenhead. Maidenhead is the home to a bridge that was originally built in 1280. The bridge that stands on the site now was built in 1777.
Bracknell, a new town which was designated in 1949, was planned for a population of 25,000 but now has a population double the size.
Sandhurst is a Berkshire town which is home to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Both Prince Harry and Prince William have been to the academy. Prince Harry’s full name is His Royal Highness Prince Harry of Wales – he served in Afghanistan from December 2007 until February 2008.
Wokingham is a civil parish and a market town in the south east of Berkshire. The town was ranked as the number one place to live in the UK in 2007 by the Halifax building society.
