Cambridge lies about 50 miles to the north of London and is a university city. The university was originally formed in 1209 and is often talked about in the same sentence as Oxford University. The 2 compete in things like the Varsity Boat Race. Cambridge University is regularly ranked in the world’s top five universities – in 2007 the THES-QS World University rankings placed Cambridge as the World’s 2nd best University. Many of the great minds of the last 700 years were alumni of the Cambridgeshire based University, including Charles Darwin, Isaac Newton and Francis Bacon.
Peterborough is in the ceremonial county of Cambridgeshire and sits on the River Nene. Peterborough was used for location shots for two James Bond Movies – Golden Eye and Octopussy.
Ely, in the north east of Cambridgeshire is one of many places covered by Marquee Hire Cambridgeshire and is famous for its spectacular cathedral which was started by William I in 1083.

Another town in Cambridgeshire is Soham. During the 2nd World War a fire began on an ammunition train that was travelling through Soham. The train would have exploded and destroyed the town had it not been for four heroic firemen who unbuckled the rest of the train and drove the burning part away from the town. Two of the firemen were killed – Jim Nighthall and Frank Bridges and the other two survived – Herbert Clarke and Benjamin Gibert. There is now a memorial in Soham explaining about the event.
Huntingdon is now in Cambridgeshire but it used to be the county town of Huntingdonshire. Huntingdon was the birthplace of Oliver Cromwell.
St Neots is Cambridgeshire’s largest town and was the home town of John Bellingham, who is the only man to have assassinated a British Prime Minister. The prime minister was called Spencer Perceval and the year was 1812. Bellingham was hanged for the crime 7 days after it took place.
Other Cambridgeshire settlements of note include Linton – the home of Linton Zoo, Wisbech – an inland port and market town and Burwell – a village with its own castle.
