The county of Dorset is mainly rural with small villages, a few large towns, but no cities. The main conurbation is the South East Dorset conurbation, this includes the seaside resort of Bournemouth, the port of Poole and the historic town of Christchurch and many villages.
The History of Dorset Bournemouth was founded by the Victorians when sea side holidays and bathing in the sea became popular in the UK. In the boundary changes of 1974 Bournemouth and Christchurch were added to the county from Hampshire, expanding the county of Dorset.
Sandbanks in Poole was considered worthless land that not even the local farmers wanted in the nineteenth century, however it is now included in the lists of highest land values by area in the world and the properties at sandbanks often sell for in excess of £1 million.
The other main towns in Dorset are Dorchester, the county town with a lot of administrative and council buildings, along with its own history and old property and the resort town of Weymouth, a seaside town that is as popular today as it was in the time of George III.
Other historical towns include Blandford forum, Gillingham, Sherborne, Shaftesbury, Bridport, Wareham, Wimborne Minster, Sturminster Newton and Gillingham. Other costal resorts popular with visiting tourists include Lyme Regis and Swanage.
The future of Dorset Poundbury is a small but growing town on the edge of Dorchester, it is an experimental new town that has been commissioned and co-designed by Prince Charles, its aim is to integrate industrial and residential units to help reduce the problems caused by car congestion that are sometimes seen in some of our larger cities. People can buy a home in Poundbury the same as you can buy a house in any part of the country, plus the surrounding countryside makes it a very popular place to live.
Travel in Dorset
There are two main railways that connect Dorset to the rest of the UK. These are the West of England Main Line that runs through the north of Dorset at Gillingham and Sherborne and the South Western Main Line that runs through the south via Bournemouth, Poole, Dorchester and ends at Weymouth. In addition, there is a line that runs from Weymouth via Dorchester to Bristol. Dorset is serviced by the Bournemouth International Airport, as well as the two passenger sea ports, at Poole and Weymouth.
