Dublin, the capital of the Republic of Ireland, is one of Europe’s fastest growing capital cities. It is estimated that 50% of Dublin’s population is 25 or under – making it a very youthful city. The fourth largest Stadium in Europe is at Croke Park in Dublin. Dublin is located on the east coast of central Eire. One of the Worlds largest rock bands in the world come from Dublin U2. To the south of Dublin is the County of Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown which is connected to Dublin by the Dublin Area Rapid Transit System. Next to Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown is Wicklow which is home to a large amount of the Wicklow Mountains.
County Clare is a county on the other side of central Eire from Dublin. The county has three main towns – Ennis, Shannon and Kilrush. Sister city to Phoenix in Arizona Ennis is sixth largest town in in Eire. Shannon is named after the nearby river and the name Kilrush means “church of the woods”.
County Galway is the 2nd largest county in Eire – and home to the only city in Connacht – Galway. The West coast of Eires most central port is Galway Port. Galway is twinned with Bradford in Yorkshire and a number of other cities. Galway is often known as Ireland’s cultural heart.
Home to the town of Naas, which has two racecourses – Naas Racecourse and Punchestown Racecourse. Kildare – in central Eire is a county with a population of just under 200,000.
Also in the central part of Eire are the counties of Tipperary North, Laois and Offaly. The population of Offaly grew by over 11% between 2002 and 2006. Laois was created by Mary I of England in 1556 and Tipperary North is part of the traditional county of Tipperary.
