Hampshire is located on the South Coast of England, and borders Berkshire, Sussex, Surrey, Wiltshire and Dorset. It’s population of just under 1.7 million residents makes it the 5th most populated county in the UK. The popluation is spread evenly across the county of Hampshire – with the three major cities being Southampton, Posrtsmouth and Basingstoke.
There are other towns of not however, including Winchester, Gosport, Aldershot, Farnborough, Alresford and Andover.
Winchester, was once not only capital of Hampshire, but also capital of England, until the Norman times, when London became capital city. Winchester is the home of a stunning cathedral, which was originally built around 1079. The cathedral was recently used in the Hollywood movie “Elizabeth – The Golden Age” which starred Cate Blanchett and Clive Owen.
Two of Britian’s best known writers also came from Hampshire – Charles Dickens and Jane Austin, who is buried in Winchester Cathedral. You can still visit Jane Austin’s house in Selbourne – near Alton.
Hampshire has excellent transport links of all kinds. These include an international airport in Southampton. South West trains travel across the county towards London and the M3 motorway goes right through the county diagonally from South West to North East on it’s way from Southampton to London.There are also ferries links to France and the Isle of Wight from Southampton and Portsmouth.
One well known place of interest in Hampshire is the Watercress Line – which is located between Alton and Alresford. This is a heritage steam railway that often hosts Thomas the Tank Engine and is a popular tourist attraction.
There are 24 independent secondary schools in the county as well as a large number of sixth form colleges and a number of universities – including Southampton, Solent, Portsmouth, Winchester and Farnborough College of Technology.
Farnborough is also well known for it’s biennual air show – which attracts over 150,000 visitors. The show has been held in Farnborough since 1948 and attracts well known acts like the Red Devils.
A large amount of the New Forest is also located in Hampshire. Roughly 90% of the forest is still owned by the Royal Family and it is home to a number of different species of deer including Red deer, Roe deer, Muntjac and Sike deer. The forest covers 16,000 acres.
