Lancashire and Merseyside are counties in the north of England. They are separate counties, but for the purposes of categorisation on Marquee Hide Guide.com, they are put together – as “Lancashire and Merseyside” which also incorporates Manchester.

The county of Lancashire is bordered to the west by the Irish Sea. Lancashire’s major towns include Lancaster, Preston, Blackburn, Bolton, Ormskirk, Accrington, Clitheroe, Burnley, Blackpool. Wigan, Rochdale and Bury, amongst others.

Lancashire’s traditional county town is Lancaster which is home to the Lancaster International Youth Games. Another well known place in Lancashire is Preston which had its city status granted in 2002.

It is arguable that the best known town in Lancashire is the seaside town of Blackpool. The UK's most popular seaside resort is Blackpool.

The large town of Blackburn is in Lancashire, has a population of a little more than 100,000 and was one of the first industrialised towns in the world. Football is played by Blackburn Rovers Football Club at Ewood park. The areas of Lancashire, Merseyside and Manchester have a hugh football tradition and Blackburn were one of only 3 teams to win the premier league in the first ten years after its inception (the others were Manchester United and Arsenal).

Manchester United is one of the two main football clubs in Manchester, along with Manchester City. Manchester is often considered to be England’s second city and the urban area has a population of 2 ¼ million people. Manchester was traditionally part of the county of Lancashire but is now a metropolitan borough.

Manchester was the host of the 2002 Commonwealth Games, which were staged at the City of Manchester Stadium – a superb 48 thousand all-seater facility.

Liverpool and Everton Football Clubs are based in Merseyside situated next to Lancashire.

Merseyside is a metropolitan and ceremonial county and is divided in half by the Mersey River. Places of interest in Merseyside include Liverpool Cathedral, The Cavern Club, World Museum Liverpool and Leasowe Castle.

In 2008 Liverpool was the European Capital of Culture. There are over 2500 listed buildings in Liverpool and the waterfront is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Beatles come from Liverpool and if you visit the city there are some very impressive historical connections all around the city.

Directly across the Mersey from Liverpool is the area known as The Wirral. Major towns in The Wirral include Birkenhead, Bebington, Wallasey, Hoylake, Heswell and West Kirby.
