One of Lincolnshire’s most famous sons is Sir Isaac Newton – who was a ground breaking Physicist and Mathematician amongst other things. His 1687 book Philosophiae Naturalis Prinicipia Mathematica is one of the most important books in the history of Science.
Another of Lincolnshire’s most notable people is Margaret Thatcher, who was the Prime Minister of the UK from 1979 until 1990. She was the longest continuous Prime Minister since the early 19th Century. One of the most famous events in her time as Prime Minister was the Iranian Embassy Siege, in which lethal force by the Armed Forces was permitted on British soil for the first time in 70 years – this siege happened in London though and not in Lincolnshire.
Scunthorpe, the epicentre of the Lincolnshire Earthquake of 2008, is mainly a steel industry town, with 4500 residents employed in this industry. The industry has been declining in the town though – at its peak, 27,000 residents were employed by the steel industry.
Grantham is an important market town in Lincolnshire and was the first place in the UK to have female police officers – in 1914. Grantham was also the site of the invention of the caterpillar track and the country’s first public library.
Other well known towns in Lincolnshire include Cleethorpes – a seaside resort near Grimsby and Spalding a market town in the south of the county.
