Northamptonshire is often abbreviated to Northants. The major towns in Northamptonshire include Rushden, Corby, Kettering, Towcester, Wellingborough. Daventry, Desborough, Silverstone and the county town of Northampton.
Corby is an industrial town in the north of Northamptonshire with a population of around 50 thousand people and was a site of a steel works. This steel works was an expected target for bombers during World War Two, but it was largely untouched by the Germans and the occasional solitary bombs left no casualties.
Northampton, Northamptonshire’s county town, is the 21st largest settlement in England and the 3rd largest town in the country. Northampton’s University was established in 1261, dissolved in 1265 and then restored in 2005. The baloon music festival is based in Northampton.
With over one hundred shoe factories at one point Rushden is often refered to as the home of the shoe or shoe city, Kettering in Northamptonshire is also well known for its footwear manufacturing .
The A5 travels through the centre of Towcester, which is in the south of Northamptonshire and is well known for its Racecourse.
Other places of note in Northamptonshire include Wellingborough – a town founded in Saxon times, Weedon Bec – which is passed through by the Grand Union Canal and Oundle – which is home to a musical festival and pipe organ school – The Oundle International Festival.
Northamptonshire is the home to half of the Silverstone race circuit, which was built on a World War Two bomber base and is the traditional home of the British Grand Prix. The British Grand Prix has been won by Lewis Hamilton in 2008 and was the first British winner since 2000 when it was won by David Coulthard for the second year running. Other British winners in the last 20 years include Johnny Herbert, Damon Hill and Nigel Mansell.
