Castle Douglas, Dumfries, Selkirk, Moffat, Girvam, Pretwick, Ayr and Kilmarnock are some of the major towns in the South of Scotland.

Ayrshire is a county in south Scotland that is located on the coast of the Firth of Clyde. The county town of Ayrshire is Ayr – which was home to Robert Burns – regarded as Scotland’s national poet – and the man who “Burns night” is named after. Twinned with Sukhumi in Georgia  (as well as other cities) is the town of Kilmarnock.

The 100th largest settlement in Scotland is the county town of Lanarkshire Lanark.

Near the east coast of southern Scotland are two counties that border each other East Lothian and Milothian. Mussleburgh is the largest town in these two counties and was the site of the battle of Pinkie Cleugh.

On the borders of Scotland and England is the county of Berwickshire. Berwick upon Tweed is no longer the county town of Berwickshire as it is no longer in Scotland. Another county on the border of Scotland and England is Roxburghshire. The administrative centre of Roxburghshire is Jedburgh which was the birth place of Mary Somerville. The word Scientist was used for the first time when reffering to Mary Somerville.

With no coast or national border on their boundary Selkirkshire and Peebleshire are Scottish counties that border each other. Peebles is Peebleshire’s county town and Selkirk is Selkirkshire’s county town.

Dumfrieshire is another county in the south of Scotland that is on the Scottish border with England. Thomas Telford the famous engineer came from Dumfrieshire.

Kirkcudbrightshire and Wigtownshire are the two most south easterly counties in Scotland. Kirkcudbrightshire covers an area of 575,000 acres and is home to the town of Castle Douglas – which is where many of Glasgow’s children were evacuated to during World War Two. Wigtownshire is home to Wigtown which is known as Scotland’s “book town”.
