Staffordshire, or Staffs for short, is a county in the midlands of England. Staffordshire’s county town is Stafford and the largest city is Stoke-on-Trent. The only other city in Staffordshire is Lichfield but major towns include Burton upon Tent, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Cannock and Tamworth. The county is split into a number of districts. Burton upon Trent is also associated with the brewing industry. The Staffordshire town is home to a number of well known brewing companies, making a number of well known drinks.
Staffordshire is the home of the UK’s most visited theme park Alton Towers. The theme park, which opened in 1980, is home to the world’s first vertical drop roller coaster but is only the 11th most visited theme park in Europe.
Newcastle-under-Lyme is a market town in North Staffordshire with a population of around 74,000. The town is part of a world-wide network of cities and towns with the name Newcastle.
Cannock is situated on the M6 toll road and is about eight miles south of Stafford – the county town of Staffordshire. Stafford is also the name of knot which can be seen on the coat of arms of the Stafford family.
