Suffolk is a county in East Anglia. The county town is Ipswich and other important urban areas include Lowestoft, Felixstowe and Bury St Edmonds. Suffolk is split into several districts – Babergh, Forest Heath, Ipswich, Mid Suffolk, St Edmondsbury, Suffolk Coastal and Waveney.
The demographic breakdown of Suffolk shows a low population of 15 to 29 year olds and a higher than average proportion of retired people. Bernie Ecclestone, the formula one magnate is from Suffolk, as are England International footballers Terry Butcher, Matthew Upson and Keiron Dyer.
Keiron Dyer started his career playing for Ipswich town FC. Ipswich is the best known town in Suffolk and has in the past tried to win city status, despite not having a cathedral. Marquee Hire Suffolk may be used for an event to mark Ipswich getting city status if it happens.
Bury St Edmonds, one of Suffolk’s major settlements, is the home of a cathedral. The cathedral was only built during the 1900s and has also had a new tower built between 2000 and 2005.
The most easterly point of Suffolk and of the United Kingdom is Lowestoft Ness, in the town of Lowestoft. Lowestoft Ness is an abandoned industrial site. Lowestoft is also home to the annual Seafront Air Festival, which was the site of the famous Harrier Crash in 2002. Thankfully no-one was killed in the crash, but the pilot did break his ankle after parachuting from the plane and then hitting it when landing.
Felixstowe in Suffolk was the home of the longest pier in the country during the 2nd World War. But the pier was purposely demolished because it was seen as an easy landing point for opposition troops. The town also has a national award winning library that was refurbished in 2006.
Newmarket, a town in north Suffolk, is the home of British horseracing and has the largest racehorse training centre in the UK. The Suffolk town is thought to have been enjoying racing from as long ago as 1174. Newmarket has a series of special horse routes, so the horses can get from the training centres to the racecourse safely. Newmarket was traditionally half in Suffolk and half in Cambridgeshire then in 1888 it was entirely enclosed into the administrative county of Suffolk.
Brantham is a village in Suffolk, situated two miles from Manningtree and nine miles from Ipswich. The town has a population of around 2700.
