Surrey is also home to a number of well known no-league football teams including AFC Wimbledon and Sutton United, although no league teams are based in the county. Sutton United shot to fame in 1989 when they knocked 1987 FA Cup winners Coventry City out of the same competition.
Woking is the second largest town in Surrey (as Kingston is now part of greater London, even though the Surrey County Council is still based there). It is 23 miles from central London and is a popular place for commuters to set up home. It is also the town where martians landed in H G Wells’ famous novel “War of the Worlds” which was later turned into a Hollywood movie. This movie wasn’t set in Woking, or Surrey or even the UK!
Camberley is another significant town in Surrey that sits between the M3 and M4 and has borders with Hampshire and Berkshire. It is near to Sandhurst, which is home to a Royal Military Academy which was attended by both Prince Harry and Prince William. Other notable alumni include Kings of Thailand, Tonga, Spain and Jordan.
Surrey has the highest cost of living in the UK outside of London and also thought to have the highest population of millionaires in the country. This is partly due to the number of commuters who work in the City in London.
