The county takes its position roughly from the ancient kingdom of Sussex which was originally established in the 12th Century. This was about a century and a half after Arundel Castle was originally built. Although it was damaged in the English Civil War, it was restored during the 18th and 19th centuries. Arundel is a small market town in the South Downs and sits on the River Arun.
