Gwent and Glamorgan is what is meant when we use the keyphrase Wales to roughly cover the south of wales. Cardiff is the capital city of Wales and is home to around 300,000 people of the 2,000,000 people that live in South Wales. The second most populated city in Wales is Swansea which is also the name of the county. Swansea lies west of Cardiff along the Glamorgan coast. Swansea is twinned with Cork in Ireland as well as other cities.
A blue flag beach can be found in the south west county of Glamorgan in the lovely town of Port Talbot. To achieve the standard of Blue flag beach the quality of water, safety and provisions (as well as other points) must be very good.

The largest attempted escape by german prisoners of war was attempted at the prisoner of war camp in Brigend during World War 2.
Merthyr Tydfil is a well known town in the south of Wales. In 1996 Merthyr Tydfil became a local government district.
