Surprisingly in 1884 an earthquake occurred within the county of Essex and is understood to have been the most destructive earthquake in Britain in more than 400 years. The area most seriously damaged by the earthquake was Colchester. It is estimated that around 3 and 5 people were fatally injured by the earthquake and that £10,000 of damage was caused.
Epping Forest is an expanse of forest that acts as a boundary between the county of Essex and London. Epping Forest covers almost 6000 acres and consists of a number of varying land types, these include bogs, grassland and ponds.
The most significant towns in the County of Essex is Southend-on-Sea. Much of Southend’s earnings is based on tourism and the town boasts the world’s longest pleasure pier. Southend pier is an amazing 1.34 miles long!
Thurrock is another major borough in Essex, whose administrative headquarters are in Grays, which is home to the Thameside Theatre. Lakeside shopping Centre is also in Thurrock, Lakeside is Essex’s largest town shopping centre – it covers 240,000 squared meters of retail space. This makes it one of the largest shopping centre’s in Europe.
Chelmsford was the home to the United Kingdom’s first ball bearing factory – which was opened in 1898 and is also home to Britvic – which is an abbreviation of the businesse’s starting name – The British Vitamin Company.
Braintree is located in the heart of the county of Essex and is about 50 metres above sea level. The town is home to the well know band The Prodigy.
