Surrey is a county close to the capital of London, that is also surrounded by the counties of Kent, Sussex, Hampshire and Berkshire. The counties historic main town is Guildford, that has a populace of around 67,000, but the regional council assembles at Kingston upon Thames.
These are two of the main towns in the Party Planners Surrey county, but there are many other large conurbations. These include Woking, Ewell, Camberley, Redhill, Ashford, Epsom, Farnham.
The county of Surrey also Houses two fine educational establishments – the University of Surrey in Guildford and the Royal Holloway university in Egham.
The town of Egham is very close to Runnymead which was the site of the Magna Carta Libertatum (Great Charter of Freedoms), which is the original English Charter put forward in 1215. It required the King to let go of certain rights, respect certain legal rules and accept that his will could be bound by the law. It specifically helped the rights of the King's subjects, whether free or imprisoned, and allowed appeal against unlawful incarceration.
Runnymead is also the home to the British memorial to President John F Kennedy who was assasinated in Dallas in November 1963.
Surrey also host’s a number of well recognized non-league football squads including AFC Wimbledon and Sutton United. Sutton United shot to fame in 1989 when they pushed 1987 FA Cup champs Coventry City out of the same competition.
Woking is the 2nd largest town in Surrey (as Kingston is now part of greater London, even though the Surrey County Council is still situated there). It is 23 miles from central London making it a well liked place for commuters to set up home. Famous as being the town where martians landed, in H G Wells’ celebrated work of fiction “War of the Worlds” which was later turned into a Hollywood movie. The movie wasn’t based in Woking, or Surrey or even the UK!
Camberley is another significant settlement in Surrey that lies between the M3 and M4 and has borders with Hampshire and Berkshire. It is near to Sandhurst, which is home to a Royal Military Academy which was attended by both Prince Harry and Prince William. Other notable alumni include the Kings of Thailand, Tonga, Spain and Jordan.
Surrey has the highest cost of living in the United Kingdom beyond the boundary of London and also thought to have the largest number of millionaires in the country. This is partly due to the amount of commuters who work in the City of London.
A famous attraction of Surrey is the “Devil’s Punchbowl” – which is a natural ampitheatre (unless of course you believe the myth’s) near Hindhead. The land is maintained by the national trust and is the focus of many regional stories and legends.
