Yorkshire is the largest county in the United Kingdom and can be split into the four sub areas: North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and East Riding of Yorkshire. The county covers six thousand square miles in total and is the home to a number of major cities, including York, Leeds, Sheffield and Kingston upon Hull.
Yorkshire is well known for its beauty and is home to three national parks – the Peak District, the North York Moors and the Yorkshire Dales. It is also home to Whitby which has in the past been voted the best beach in the United Kingdom
The accompaniment to Roast beef, Yorkshire pudding is probably the most famous food stuff to come from the county, although Yorkshire Tea is also a firm favourite.
Bradford, also in West Yorkshire, is the main city of the borough of “The City of Bradford” which has a population of just less than ½ a million people.
The World Snooker Championships are based in Sheffield and along with football are part of the Cities sporting make up.
Other major urban areas in Yorkshire include Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster, Selby, Harrogate, Kirklees, Calderdale, Bradford, Craven, Hambleton, Scarborough and Ryedale.
The Yorkshire City of Leeds is one of the top 10 in England. Leeds has won many tourism awards including city of the year.
In England Rhubarb is grown mainly in the Rhubarb triangle of Wakefield, Morley and Rothwell.
York is in North Yorkshire and is another city well known for its bustling tourist trade. In 2007 the Green Party had two councillors in the city of York council.
Hull is on the Humber river estuary and is more properly referred to as Kingston upon Hull. The River Hull joins the river Humber estuary and at this point there is a tidal surge barrier. The Humber bridge is also close to the city. At the time of its construction the Humber bridge was the longest single span suspension bridge in the world.
