Sussex as a county stands close to the ancient kingdom of Sussex which was first established in the 12th Century. About a century and a half after Arundel Castle was built. The castle was damaged in the English Civil War, restoration was carried out during the 18th and 19th centuries. Arundel is a small market town on the South Downs and sits on the River Arun.
Brighton is not only a university town, but also a well loved seaside resort, similar too Bognor Regis. Brightons Piers are world famous. The West Pier suffered terrible damage in 2003 when it was ravaged by fire. It is planned to replace it with a landmark called i360, which will be a 172m high tower, with views across the area.
Lewes is one of the largest towns in East Sussex it is the county town of East Sussex and is located on the River Ouse. With a population of about sixteen thousand and is renowned for its extencive bonfire celebrations on November 5th.
The town of East Grinstead is in West Suxxex with a population of twentynine tousand. The town has the headquarters in the UK of the Church of Scientology. East Grinstead, like many other towns in Sussex, is used by commuters for London.
The second largest airport in the UK is in Sussex – Gatwick Airport. Gatwick is located in Crawley and is owned by BAA. In 2007 Gawtick processed over thirtyfive million people. 3 of the most popular airlines operate from Gatwick airport – BA, Virgin Atlantic and EasyJet.
Worthing is another major area in Sussex, the borough has a population of almost one hundred thousand and is served by 5 railway stations – East worthing, Worthing, West Worthing, Durrington-on-Sea and Goring.
