Wedding Chair Covers Tyne and Wear covers a county that is centred around the Rivers Tyne and Wear. There are five boroughs in Tyne and Wear – Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and the City of Sunderland. Tyne and Wear only borders two other counties – County Durham and Northumberland.

Newcastle upon Tyne is most commonly referred to just as Newcastle, it without doubt the most well known city in the county.  Newcastle was founded in the 2nd century and is the 20th most populated in England. The people of Newcastle are often known as Geordies due to the local dialect. Geordie words include Canny (good) howay (come on) bonny (pretty) and chuffed (happy).

The 1849 “High Level Bridge” that went from Newcastle to another Tyne and Wear town – Gateshead – was the first road / rail bridge in the world.

Gateshead lies on the south bank of the River Tyne and is the home of the Gateshead International Stadium – one of the UK’s leading international athletics track. Gateshead was the site of a 2006 100m world record when Asafa Powell ran the distance in 9.77 seconds – the record has since been broken.

The Angel of the North is referred to by locals as the Gateshead flasher is a well known Tyne and Wear landmark. The huge steel sculpture depicts an angel and stands twenty metres high. It is an inspiring and iconic piece of public art and was begun in 1994 at a cost of about £1 million.

Sunderland used to be a county borough but is now a city. During World War Two Sunderland was one of the most bombed cities in the United Kingdom. Some of the suburbs of Sunderland have most of their street names beginning with the same letter.  This can be seen in Grindon (where most streets begin with the letter G), Ford estate (the letter F), Springwell (the letter S) and many other suburbs.

Boxing legend Mohammed Ali had his wedding blessed in a local mosque in South Shields.

Coal mining and shipbuilding are both important industries in Wallsend. Wallsend was the site of the building of many warships including HMS Sheffield, HMS King George V and HMS Victorious.
