The West Midlands are split into 7 boroughs; The City of Birmingham, The City of Coventry, The City of Wolverhampton, Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull and Walsall. West Midlands borders Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Staffordshire. The county of West midlands has only existed in its current form since 1974.

Birmingham is England’s second city and has a population of just over one million people. The city absorbed the town of Sutton Coldfield in the 1970s and has over 8,000 acres of parkland open spaces. Birmingham’s largest park – Sutton Park – is the largest urban nature reserve in Europe. The huge West Midlands’ city accounts for 42% of the exhibition and conference trade in the UK due to its huge International Convention Centre and National Exhibition Centre.

Coventry is the 9th largest city in England and the second largest in the county of West Midlands. Coventry is further from the coast than any other city in the UK. Coventry is twinned with the Russian city of Volgograd which was formerly known as Stalingrad.

Walsall’s population grew from 2000 to 86000 in the space of 200 years due to the Industrial Revolution.

Solihull, which is part of the West Midlands conurbation is the fifth richest borough in the UK. Although there is no university in the town, there are 5 within 25Km of Solihull.

West Bromwich Albion Football Club has won the FA Cup five times in its history.

Wolverhampton, another West Midlands’ City has a population of just over ¼ of a million people and was the site of the production of the first car to hold a land speed record that was over 200 mph. Wolverhampton’s traffic based history isn’t finished their either; The town was the site for the first automatic traffic lights in England.

As well being the year the county was officially formed, 1974 was also an important year for the West Midlands’ town of Sutton Coldfield as it was the year that the library opened.
