How Much Space Do You Need for a Marquee Wedding?
Planning a marquee wedding offers a world of possibilities — stunning views, flexible layouts, and the freedom to create a completely bespoke celebration. But before you dive into décor and guest lists, there’s a practical (and crucial) question to answer first: How much space do you actually need for a marquee wedding?
The answer depends on several factors — your guest numbers, the type of marquee, the layout, and the extra features you’re including. Here’s a breakdown to help you estimate how much space you’ll need for your big day.
1. Guest Numbers and Seating Style
A key starting point is how many guests you’re inviting and whether you’re opting for a sit-down meal, buffet, or cocktail-style event.
As a general rule of thumb:
-
Seated meal (round tables): Allow 10–12 square feet per guest
-
Seated meal (long banquet tables): Allow 8–10 square feet per guest
-
Standing/cocktail reception: Allow 6–8 square feet per guest
So, for 100 guests seated at round tables, you’ll need approximately 1,000–1,200 square feet just for dining. If you're planning a more informal, standing-style celebration, you may be able to work with 600–800 square feet for guest space.
2. Additional Spaces to Factor In
Besides guest seating, marquee weddings often include several other key zones. Be sure to account for:
-
Dance floor: Allow 2–4 square feet per dancing guest (not everyone dances at once). A 20' x 20' floor (400 sq ft) works for around 100–120 guests.
-
Bar area: 100–200 sq ft, depending on size and setup
-
Stage or DJ booth: 100–300 sq ft, especially if you have a live band
-
Buffet or food service area: 100–200 sq ft
-
Lounge or chill-out area: Optional, but plan 100–200 sq ft for a cosy setup
-
Entrance/Reception area: 100–150 sq ft
All of these should be added to your total square footage. It’s often easiest to consult with your marquee supplier, who can provide layout drawings based on your requirements.
3. Outdoor Site Space Requirements
Once you’ve calculated the size of the marquee itself, you also need to consider the overall footprint of the marquee on your property or venue. This includes:
-
Marquee size plus guy ropes or anchoring space: Add at least 6–10 feet of clearance around the entire perimeter
-
Catering tents or service areas: These are often set up behind the main marquee and require 200–400 sq ft
-
Restroom trailers or mobile toilets: These are usually placed nearby but out of direct view — they’ll need solid, level ground and access for delivery
-
Car parking: Roughly one space per 2 guests (or arrange shuttle service)
4. Ground Conditions Matter
The site needs to be flat, well-drained, and accessible for installation vehicles. Sloped lawns, uneven ground, or areas with poor drainage may require levelling platforms or flooring, which can increase costs and complexity.
